Governors Drive and Medical District Safety Study

About This Project

The City of Huntsville was awarded a US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant to develop a safety study for Governors Drive and the Medical District (8.7 miles along Governors Drive and a one-square-mile area of the Medical District which is bordered by Lowe Avenue, California Street, Bob Wallace Avenue, and Memorial Parkway). The City of Huntsville will use the funding to conduct a detailed study of traffic crashes and safety conditions in the project area. The project team will develop a comprehensive plan for improving roadway safety along the corridor while maintaining traffic flow and accommodating people using all modes of transportation.

Identify where crashes are happening and why.
Connect with people to understand their concerns and priorities.
Identify projects that improve safety for everyone.

How to Use

Click "Add Marker" to drop a pin at the location where you have identified an issue or opportunity. After placing a pin, you will be prompted to describe the issue or opportunity in more detail.

Choose a category for your pin that best fits the issue:

ADA Concerns: Challenges for People Living with Disabilities, including: Accessible Pedestrian Signal (APS) needs; detectable warning ramps needed, sidewalk/crosswalk needs; lighting, etc.
Biking Concerns: Challenges for people biking, including missing or unsafe bike lanes, or conflicts with vehicles.
Driving/Vehicle Concerns: Issues affecting driver safety, such as dangerous intersections, speeding, or poor visibility.
Near Misses: Locations where you have observed close calls or that seem high-risk for potential crashes, particularly crashes involving people walking, biking, and rolling.
Transit Concerns: Problems with transit, such as unsafe stops, lack of shelters, or conflict with other modes.
Walking Concerns: Pedestrian safety issues like unsafe crosswalks, missing sidewalks, or poor lighting.
Other Concerns: Any other safety issues.

The project team will analyze the data collected from this activity and incorporate your feedback into the final plan, which will help prioritize issues and locations that are most important to the community. This ensures that the final plan reflects the actual concerns and priorities of those who live and work in the region.
